Day 13 - Lourdes

Scheduled departure from Lourdes was not until after lunch, so we had the morning for Mass and a "self guided" tour of the town. The Lourdes web page contains quite a bit of information about the town. Another site has a series of photos of Lourdes and Bernadette. And a very detailed web site offers information on Dublin Diocesan Pilgrimages to Lourdes.

Morning Mass was in the Chapel of Saints Cosmas and Damien. This is located in one of the buildings on the avenue in front of the basilica. This morning we were joined by a group from England.

Walking Tour

After Mass Peter and I went walking around, while Yvonne went on a shopping expedition.

The grotto where Mary appeared to Bernadette in 1858, and where miraculous cures take place.

Collecting some Holy Water.

The Basilicas

There are actually two basilicas located here, the upper and lower. They are not so much one above the other as one behind the other.

The basilicas as seen from the avenue where the torchlight procession takes place.

The two basilicas, and in the distance, the castle (between the tree on the left and the lower spire in the middle).

Inside the upper basilica.

Looking out the doors of the upper basilica along the avenue used for the torchlight procession.
